Neck pain can occur suddenly if you have an injury or other trauma, but it can also develop from everyday situations such as poor posture or sleep. Whatever the cause, you can do a few easy things to reduce your discomfort before you seek medical attention. Here are five tips that may help you.

Use Ice Packs to Chill Your Muscles

When you experience pain, use ice or a cold pack to lessen the inflammation. Cold treatment is most effective during the first 24 hours that the pain starts.

Switch to Heating Methods

After the first day or two, you may want to switch to warmth from a heating pad or hot shower. The heat can help your muscles relax and increase blood flow to encourage healing.

Try Anti-Inflammatory Medicine

Anti-inflammatory medication can also offer relief from neck pain, and you do not need a prescription to use them. Look for pain relief medication or ask for recommendations from a pharmacist.

Go Get a Massage

Massage may improve the range of motion in your neck and work out some of the tightness. Listen to your body if you find the pressure is too firm or the movement increases your pain.

Keep Yourself Hydrated

Staying hydrated is important for good disc function as well as your total well-being. Drink plenty of water to keep your tissue healthy.

If your pain persists after a few days of home remedies, you should have a doctor examine your neck. Contact Specialists in Pain Management at 423-698-0850 to learn more about treatment for neck pain.
