Joint pain is a common ailment for adults, no matter the age. Usually, it begins as a slight annoyance— you may have some stiffness after a day of yardwork—but it can evolve over time if not treated properly. Depending on the diagnosis, a doctor may opt for a steroid injection in the joint.

How It’s Done

A steroid injection is quite simple. If desired, the patient can request a local anesthetic. Then, the doctor uses a needle and syringe to inject a corticosteroid into the joint, but not into any tendons, nerves or arteries.

What It Does

There are three general types of corticosteroids used to treat joint pain: short-acting, intermediate-acting, and long-acting. The type of steroid chosen depends on the severity of the pain or injury and the desired effect.

Make sure you consult with your pain management doctor about your condition.
